How To Come Up With Content Ideas For Your Business Blog

If you are truly serious about utilizing the power of content to grow your business, you will be creating a lot of content over the course of next 1-2 years.

Step 1 – Create a Mission Statement

The reason for creating content is simple – it should make some difference to other people’s lives. And so the content you create should be focussed on helping a very specific group of people.

This is possible only when you are absolutely clear about these 2 things

  1. What difference you want to make
  2. Who are those whose lives will be changed because of your content or business

If you haven’t found the answers to these 2 questions yet, keep looking.

Remember what Richard Branson says,

If you aren’t making a difference in other people’s lives, you shouldn’t be in business – it’s that simple!

But once you have the answers make it your mission statement.

So the first piece of content that you need to create is your mission statement.

Mission statement of any business simply defines what difference it is going to make in other people’s lives

For example

The mission of Whole Lotta Leads is to help 10,000 solopreneurs and small business owners to generate leads for their business by Dec 2018.

Many small business owners and solopreneurs feel they are not good enough and they can’t run a business and so they give up. In reality, anybody can build and grow a business if they have the right knowledge, mindset, and willingness to put in the efforts.

The main aim of whole lotta leads is to share the knowledge required for every small business owner to be successful.

The purpose of having a written mission statement is to remind you of the commitment that you have made to yourself. Because there will be times when you will feel like giving up, but you won’t because your mission will serve as a lighthouse and keep you focused on your purpose.

Once you have a written mission statement you can’t start brainstorming content ideas for your blog.

What is a blog

All content that you create should help your readers solve some specific problem. The place where you share such content is called a blog.

While searching for a perfect definition of a blog I stumbled upon this wonderful blog post written by Karen Evan on her blog ‘Start Blogging Online

The post is titled

‘What is a Blog: Blogging Basics (9 Pro Blogger Definitions)’.

To get the real definition of a blog, She asked one simple question to 9 pro bloggers and it was this

“What is a blog? Please explain it in 3-5 sentences.

Here is a snippet of the answer given by Neil Patel

A blog is a channel where you share your thoughts. Think of it as a public journal, diary, or even book. You can share personal thoughts, quick updates, or even educate others on what you learned. – Neil Patel

Step 2 – Create categories and sub categories

Let’s suppose your niche is teaching working moms how to be in shape.

Then you could create primary categories like

  1. Fitness
  2. Health
  3. Food
  4. Weight Loss

And then within each of those categories, you can have multiple sub categories like

>> Cardio, Strength Training, Yoga

>> Digestive Health, Tiredness & Fatigue, Sleep, Stress & Anxiety

>> Salads, Lunch Bowl Recipes, Desserts

Weight Loss
>> Diet, Lifestyle, Fasting

Your goal should be to create around 10-15 sub categories.

This will make it so much easier for you to come up with content ideas.

As a result, your blog will be much more organized which is good for SEO, your potential customers will be able to find they are looking which means more engagement and also you will be able to test which topics are relevant to your audience which will ensure that your future blog posts are popular.


Step 3 – Content ideas for each subcategory

To generate content ideas always keep two things in mind one is your target audience and second is their problem

Let’s say our sub category is sleep and target audience is working moms.

So we are interested in creating content for helping a working mom get a good night’s sleep.

Start firing google queries – working moms + sleep, bedroom + sleep, food + sleep, habits + sleep, exercise + sleep etc.

Observe the search results and tweak the title to fit your target audience.

Here are some examples

Google Search: natural + sleep
Search Result: Natural ways to fall asleep faster
Content Idea: Working moms should do this to fall asleep faster

Google Search: Best Pillow + Sleep
Search Result: Best pillows for side sleepers
Content Idea: Sleeping with a baby? Use this pillow

Google Search: Bedroom + Sleep
Search Result: How to Give Your Bedroom a Better-Sleep Makeover
Content Idea: Bedroom makeover ideas to get better sleep (for a working mom)

I enjoy generating new content ideas this way. I am not sure if anybody uses this method.

A lot of people use content idea tools these days. I am bit old fashioned and prefer the good old Google Search.

Step 4 – Evergreen Content Ideas

Every business blog needs some evergreen content that will help them to market their products and services effectively. Evergreen content should offer indepth information and must be updated frequently so that it remains fresh and relevant.

  1. About Page & What do you do?
  2. Industry FAQs – Visit Quora, Reddit or industry specific forums to get a ton of ideas
  3. How to articles (with examples)
  4. Ultimate guide to some customer pain point- For beginners and experts
  5. Quiz – Do you need to buy – some product or service in your niche
  6. Buyer’s guide for products /services in your niche
  7. Why should customers choose you? – Benefits, pros and cons, comparison etc
  8. List of most popular posts & common myths in your niche.
  9. Customer stories or case studies
  10. Cheat sheets, checklists, and insanely actionable lists
  11. Tools, Resources, & Product reviews

If you are just starting out as a blogger don’t get overwhelmed by all the noise that this out there about blogging being tough and it’s not easy to get found and all that negative talk.

Just focus on creating great original content. It’s not difficult to get found if you can stand out. And the only way to stand out is to keep posting great content on regular basis, keep growing your network, & always ask for help.
